I make small publications
i’ve been making zines, books, prints and websites since the late 90s.
i’ve also been involved in community building around self publishing (i ran moon rocket distribution from 2000-2006, was part of running small print zinefest in 2003 & 2005, and co-directed alphabet city art space in 2011-2013).
these eight zines are in print at the moment:
front yard feud and front yard friend, two mini fanzines about the cats of mount eden. feud introduces the two neighbour cats who i met through their turf war over my front yard. it was my entry to auckland zinefest’s 24 hour zine challenge in 2022. friend was written a year later, and shares an update about the victor.
‘i would be happy!’: stories of trans māori lives is a mini zine based on a talk i gave for trans day of remembrance in 2021, and shares small (real) stories about māori trans women living in the 1800s & early 1900s, based on brief glimpses in colonial newspapers.
the singular they is a short reflection about a personal pronoun.
some things get better all the time is a mini compilation of life advice compiled from old science magazines. it’s also available from red letter distro.
odd fish: the gay dolphin of opononi was my entry to a 48 hour zine challenge, based on the randomly-assigned criteria MYSTERY, DOLPHINS & SEWN BINDING. it’s about the brief life & mysterious demise of opo, who visited opononi in 1955.
the small print is a collaborative zine put together by the attendees at small print 2003 and 2005, auckland’s first zinefests. they share a bit of small print history, and contributions of writing, comics, collage and random thoughts & things.
